Syracuse-area groups
working on peace and social justice issues are collaborating to open
a new center at 2013 E. Genesee St. in Syracuse.
The location for
the Syracuse Center for Peace and Social Justice was chosen because
it was close to downtown, along a bus route, a central location for
Syracuse University and Le Moyne students and in a racially diverse
neighborhood, said Ann Tiffany, a board member of the new center.
Tiffany said the
groups started raising money for the building in October and now have
more than $200,000, which is more than halfway toward their goal. The
money will be used to purchase the two-story building, renovate the
property with an elevator and expanded parking lot and improve the building's
energy efficiency.
The Syracuse Peace
Council, Peace Action of Central New York and the American Friends Service
Committee all have ommitted to renting space in the building. The anti-nuclear
group Citizens Awareness Network also may come on board.
Tiffany said the
groups have been thinking about starting a center like this for years
and finally put the plan into action because the Peace Council outgrew
its space and was looking for a place to rent.
"We wanted
to work more closely, support each other, share resources and share
space," Tiffany said.
She said the second
floor of the new building has a large open space that will be available
to outside groups with similar peace or social justice values who want
to use it for meetings, workshops, video screenings or other events.
